Getting called a motherf*cker by a cold call telemarketer

So spring has sprung and the air-duct cleaning cold callers were out in full force today; they’ve hit both my cell phones while I was at work and then my landline this evening around dinner time.

This is technically illegal: Canada has a national “do not call” list and any company telemarketing to people on this list (me included) can be fined. Of course these sketchy call centers operate from India out of reach of the CRTC.

So I ’ve started fighting back.

At first I tried wasting their time by asking them to give me a quote while listing different types of ducks: “ok I’ve got 12 mallards a couple of Eiders and a Muscovy, how much to do the lot ? Oh and make sure you get under the tail feathers, I really wasn’t happy with how slapdash the last guy was...”

This didn’t work too well, they mostly got confused and it was awkward.

SSo my simpler and more puerile response now is just to quack at them until they hang up on me.

There’s an art to it, you have to make the tone of the quacks sound like a statement or sentence -think Daffy duck- so it takes a few exchanges for them to realize it’s not just a bad connection.

S far I’ve had:

“ ohhh ducks , very funny....CLICK”

Mostly they just hang up, but today I got:

“mumble mumble mumble Mother*cker....CLICK”

Irealize I’m only messing with some poor 20-something wage slave in Mumbai not the mastermind of the scheme but they’re a pest and likely a scam so I’ll take retribution where I can get it.

I highly recommend this technique, being more irritating to the telemarketers than they are to us t feels like winning on some level.

Rare Australian, Antarctic DUK W for your time

I watched a YouTube video on it one time. You say yes, to everything. But yes is the only word you say the entire phone call.  Any question any statement, no matter how absurd. Reeeeally makes them mad.

That’s evil as they probably aren’t allowed to hang up on a call that sounds like it’s going positively!

At least the idiot doing bird impressions you can drop quickly

Dayum, I bet that’d be super easy to do that with a bot, just divert and leave them doing the Turing test.

Couple of years ago there was a particularly egregious one here which blared a foghorn at you before saying you’d won a cruise.

I read a story some time after that it’d been traced back to a small marketing company in Florida who had by then been threatened/shamed into cutting it out but by then it’d hit literally millions of people.

I went and looked up the officers of the company then traced the husband and wife owners to their fancy waterfront  house on a canal.

I still harbor dreams of running a Kickstarter to hire a party boat with massive speakers and floodlights to blast that ad into their bedroom windows randomly at 3 in the morning!

Apparently you should never say yes on these calls. Ive read that they are actually trying to get your voice saying yes to help with identity theft.  Sounds crazy but it’s been written about in mainstream publications.

We have the same here in the U.K. (it’s a £10,000 fine), but the Indian callers keep going.

Had one the other week so they are a company that specialises in reducing nuisance calls, I told the guy, he was the nuisance caliper and to f**k off.

The worst are the ones asking for my mother who passed in February, for three months they phoned several times a day, in the end we just shouted down the phone, ‘she’s f**king dead’.

Some of our phone companies have a nuisance call handler. If the number is not on an approved list, the caller is sent to an automated assistant which asks the caller their name and what they are calling about, the automated assistant then calls through and asks if the recipient wants to take the call, if yes, it's put through, if no, the call is terminated.
